About the role

Description


POSITION PURPOSE


Provides daily pharmacy technical and professional services to inpatients, outpatients and other Health Center departments. Dispenses prescriptions and counsels patients on the correct use of medications. Provides drug information to patients and health care professionals in the Health Center. Responds to routine and emergency requests in a prompt, efficient manner requiring some independent judgment, a good level of technical knowledge and a high degree of accuracy. The consequences of a compounding or drug selection error, if undetected, could result in serious patient injury.


Essential Functions And Responsibilities


  • Performs all functions of a Pharmacy Technician on a regular basis.
  • Reviews, processes and dispenses outpatient prescriptions and counsels outpatients on the proper use of medication. Receives verbal prescriptions from physician for outpatient dispensing.
  • Reviews written medication orders to determine clarity, reasonable dose, schedule and appropriate medication usage. Consults directly with physicians if change or clarification is needed and enters appropriate clarifications in patient’s charts.
  • Checks unit dose cart fill for accuracy and completeness against computer printout.
  • Compounds special topical and internal dosage forms not available through pharmaceutical manufacturers in accordance with established departmental practice.
  • Maintains good rapport and cooperative relationships. Approaches conflict in a constructive manner. Helps to identify problems, offer solutions, and participate in their resolution.
  • Maintains the confidentiality of information acquired pertaining to patient, physicians, associates, and visitors to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. Discusses patient and hospital information only among appropriate personnel in appropriately private places
  • Behaves in accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values of Mission Health.
  • Assumes responsibility for performance of job duties in the safest possible manner, to assure personal safety and that of coworkers, and to report all preventable hazards and unsafe practices immediately to management.
  • Performs duties in compliance with all federal, state and local regulatory requirements.

Other Functions And Responsibilities


  • Participates in ongoing studies, projects and clinical research under the direction of the management and the clinical staff.
  • Participates in Drug Use Evaluation (DUE) and Adverse Drug Reaction (ADR) programs.
